Snodgrass was one of Premier Leagues best players
|
According to the Guardian and I know it's a woman writer
Will Robert Snodgrass still be a West Ham player next season? It is surprising to hear Hammers fans say they are a bit underwhelmed by Robert Snodgrass. Before swapping Hull for east London, and a significant wage hike, in a £10m January transfer the Scotland winger looked one of the best players in the Premier League. Snodgrass did all right in the draw at Sunderland, where his wonderfully whipped in left-foot corner created a goal for James Collins but at times certain team-mates seemed slightly reluctant to give him the ball. There are suggestions that Rafael Benítez might like to transplant the 29‑year‑old to Newcastle United – who would probably be already promoted had Benítez been allowed to sign him in January – this summer in a move which could suit all parties. If not, Snodgrass’s West Ham team-mates are going to have to start utilising, rather than wasting, his very real talent. Louise Taylor

Might as well have thrown £10m into a cement mixer. He's absolutely crap.
No pace, limited passing, defensively poor. He's just about good for whipping in the odd set piece.
When Billic gets sacked at the end of the season, the new boss will either rightfully bin this sack of shit to the reserves or flog him to some other gullible club.

Fair play to your take on it Runs, but I've always thought he was an average player who done the odd good thing that people see on MOTD and think he's a tasty player.
From what I've seen so far, he's matched my expectations of him, apart from the fact we haven't seen one of his odd moments of quality. Cannot believe the dough we've chucked at him, given his age.

I just put it down to the fact that he was available and we had some money.
And I agree, bit unfortunate of him to come in after Payet had gone. They play a similar position and it may have been a signing to appease the fans.
But anyone thinking Snodgrass was bought replace Payet needs their head testing. In my humble opinion of course.

"But he wasn't a direct replacement for Payet was he? I don't ever recall anyone saying he was.
I don't think we ever directly tried to replace Payet did we?
I think the only resemblance is they can both take a decent free-kick."
You’re right, Russ. I should of put something along the lines of “ a signing to appease the fans after Payet was sold”
I think It was unfortunate for Snodgrass that he was signed not long after Payet, was sold - thus making it feel like an underwhelming signing.

He was an underwhelming signing as a replacement for Payet, no one can deny that.
But to say he is shit is bollocks. He wouldn't of had the career he has had, if he was shit.
The problem is everyone then go to the games, moans like old women or spoilt kids, and gets on the players back. then surprise, surprise the player doesn't perform...
We've become the Tottenham of the new millennium...thank fuck I don't go half as much as I used to..

Yes I think we are singing from the same hymn sheet here. My point was that I have made negative comments about Snailpace Snodgrass. That was based on watching him and seeing a slow winger without a decent trick. Yet his stats show him to contribute to the team effort in other ways than I expect to see from a winger...
Opposition fullbacks aren't phased by Snodgrass like they would be facing Eden Hazard but then where do we get a Hazard in the January window? They don't grow on trees that's for sure...

No. You are right.
But I don't believe Snodgrass is as bad as people are saying.... Neither Fonte. I thought they both played decent on Saturday.
But they have both had to move to London. Getting sorted. New place of work. New environment. New colleagues. Training methods, protocol this that and the other.
I am not making excuses for him. I agree, he hasn't been as effective as we had all hoped. But I see glimpses of the player we bought. And I am sure he will come good.
Main problem is that they have both come into a team that is seriously lacking confidence and stability. We've got shed loads of injuries. Not playing our best eleven. A team that has forgotten how to defend. They've been dropped in and are finding their feet. Supporters at war with owners. Manager having a poor season.
This season feels like one big mess. That's not their fault. They have been brought into it all. Once the dust settles and we get this arse of a season out the way I am sure they will be good for us.
Snoddy needs a goal. He's desperate. When he had that one taken off his left by Ayew on Saturday he look like he wanted to cry. Proper frustrated. Once he gets a goal he will be flying I reckon.

He was better on Saturday, worked hard.
Same with Fonte, who I thought was excellent on Saturday.

Will - He had one of his better games on saturday. But he's still average and always will be.
As for judging players on the "statistical analysis" - statistics can be helpful and are a useful tool. But they can also be hugely misleading. They need to be used in conjunction with some knowledge of the game, the position a player is in, the role he is supposed to be playing, the team he plays for, etc
I suspect the original writer of the article used statistics to come up with the comment that Snodgrass was one of the best players in the Premier League up till joining us. Anyone who has seen him play will know that is utter nonsense.

but the point of buying two experienced premiership players is so that they don't need time to settle. it's not like they are coming to a new country, new language, to a league they don't know, to a style of football and pace they are unaccustomed to, to a step up in class.

I will give him time to settle. He needs to be judged on next season rather than the first few months after being bought in January.

Re: Snodgrass was one of Premier Leagues best players

I'll repeat. In the statistical analysis of the game, Snodgrass was WH's best player on Saturday with a score of 7.62; 24 passes; 87.5% accuracy.
Next best mark was Collins 7.34; Ayew 7.24; Lanzini 7.14; Carroll 7.09; Kouyate 7.08; Fonte 6.67; Fernandes 6.24; Masuaku 6.21; Randolph 5.63; Byram 5.24.
I don't know how they allocate marks but clearly they give Byram a low score for 2 x yellows and I guess number of accurate passes, goals scored, shots blocked etc.
We fans tend you judge players by how eye-catching they are which broadly agrees with stats but we give too much negativity to a winger without a trick and snail's pace when compared to how effective he is during the game I suppose?

Re: Snodgrass was one of Premier Leagues best players

He is an average, mid to lower half, Premiership player who stands out for the likes of Hull because he takes all their free kicks and corners and they tend to not have amazingly creative players.
He was an odd signing for us, way overpriced. The whole thing had a slight whiff of panic.
Since he's joined us he's done exactly as I suspected he would. Average. If we want to be top ten he should be a squad player who we only see on the pitch every now and then.
